How do you compare individual performances across different levels of footy?

That’s the problem we’re trying to solve in the first annual Jumper Punches Top 20.

Every football media property in the world has a list, so we thought it was about time WA’s new favourite footy newsletter had one too.

But this isn’t just any list. This list will help us crown the player who had the best individual season of any player across the WA footy landscape - Fremantle and West Coast’s AFL and AFLW sides, plus every team in the WAFL, WAFLW and Colts competitions as well.

A quick note: this is version 1.0 of the Jumper Punches Top 20 of 2025, with an update to come at the conclusion of the AFLW season. AFLW players have been rated based on a body of work across the first seven rounds of the season.

It starts with a vibe-based rating of a player’s season out of 10 relative to the rest of their competition, drawing on impact, medal counts and sense checks from other people in the know.

That number then gets run through a patented formula that I definitely didn’t create with the help of Chat GPT, with weightings given for higher levels of competition, whether a player won an individual medal for their efforts, team of the year selections and, finally, premiership victory.

It must be noted the young guns who played a lot of representative or school footy are at a disadvantage due to limited games in their main competitions. Not many made the list.

In the event of a tied rating, priority is given to level of competition - AFL & AFLW before WAFL etc - and then their team’s total wins for the year.

Given my dubious recent history when it comes to maths, we’ll see if this all stacks up. If I missed your favourite player, I’m sorry. Lists are hard.

Alright then. Hold on to your butts.
